Melissa R. Harper, MSN, APRN, SANE-A, SANE-P

Bio – Melissa has been a Registered Nurse since 1990 and a forensic nurse since 1995. She also teaches both nursing and paramedic students as adjunct faculty for the Jefferson College of Health Sciences. She holds an MSN degree, as well as she completed Clinical Nurse Specialist education with a focus in forensic nursing. She is a founding member of the Carilion Clinic Forensic Nurse Examiner Program in Roanoke, Virginia, as well a founding member of the Nursing Honor Society of the Roanoke Valley-Tau Phi Chapter. She is certified as both a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adult/ Adolescent (SANE-A) and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Pediatric (SANE-P). She is a member of the International Association of Forensic Nurses, the Emergency Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau. Melissa also participates with numerous local community agencies and boards as a forensic nurse representative. She recently collaborated with the local Family Violence Coordinating Council to write the “Building Healthy Relationships” series, currently utilized in Roanoke City schools in an effort to decrease the likelihood of teens entering into unhealthy relationships. She has also successfully co-written several grant proposals for forensic equipment purchases. She has presented over 100 lectures on a variety of forensic related topics at both the local and state level.
